Teaspoons vs. Tablespoons: The Complete Volume Conversion Guide

One US tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons: 14.79 millilitres against 4.93. That threefold ratio is larger than any density error you can make, which is why mixing up "tsp" and "tbsp" does more damage than any other measurement mistake in cooking.

The ratio, and where it comes from

A US tablespoon is defined as half a US fluid ounce and a teaspoon as one sixth, so a tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons by definition, not by approximation. In millilitres: 4.92892 for the teaspoon and 14.78676 for the tablespoon.

The US cup is 48 teaspoons, which is 16 tablespoons or 236.6 mL. Every US volume measure in a recipe is a whole-number multiple of the teaspoon, which is what makes scaling recipes tractable.

Metric kitchens use a 5 mL teaspoon and a 15 mL tablespoon, preserving the same 3:1 ratio and differing from the US units by 1.4% — a gap no kitchen can detect. Australia is the exception: its tablespoon is 20 mL, which is four teaspoons, not three.

The ratio being exact rather than approximate is more useful than it sounds. It means the relationship holds for weight as well as volume, for every ingredient, without any density information at all: whatever a teaspoon of something weighs, a tablespoon of the same thing weighs exactly three times as much. You can convert between the two units knowing nothing about what is in the spoon.

That is unusual. Almost every other conversion in cooking requires knowing the ingredient — grams to teaspoons certainly does, since a teaspoon holds 1.8 g of cocoa and 7.0 g of honey. Teaspoons to tablespoons is one of the few that does not.

The full ladder

From the smallest conventional measure to a cup, all in teaspoons:

  • 1 smidgen = 1/32 tsp. 1 pinch = 1/16 tsp. 1 dash = 1/8 tsp. Conventions, not standards.
  • ¼ tsp, ½ tsp, ¾ tsp — the fractions a standard spoon set provides and the ones recipes are written around.
  • 1 tablespoon = 3 tsp = 14.79 mL.
  • 1 fluid ounce = 6 tsp = 2 tbsp.
  • ¼ cup = 12 tsp = 4 tbsp.
  • ⅓ cup = 16 tsp = 5 tbsp + 1 tsp — the one that is not a whole number of tablespoons.
  • ½ cup = 24 tsp = 8 tbsp.
  • 1 cup = 48 tsp = 16 tbsp = 237 mL.

What each holds, in grams

The 3:1 ratio is exact for volume, so it carries straight through to weight: a tablespoon of anything weighs three times what a teaspoon of the same thing weighs. The absolute figures still depend on the ingredient, which is where tsp-to-g stops being a fixed ratio and starts needing a density.

  • Table salt: 6.0 g per tsp, 18.0 g per tbsp.
  • Granulated sugar: 4.2 g per tsp, 12.6 g per tbsp.
  • All-purpose flour: 2.6 g per tsp, 7.8 g per tbsp.
  • Baking soda: 4.8 g per tsp, 14.4 g per tbsp.
  • Active dry yeast: 3.1 g per tsp, 9.3 g per tbsp — a tablespoon is more than one and a half sachets.
  • Honey: 7.0 g per tsp, 21.0 g per tbsp.
  • Olive oil: 4.5 g per tsp, 13.5 g per tbsp.
  • Water: 4.9 g per tsp, 14.7 g per tbsp.

The abbreviation problem

Nearly every teaspoon-tablespoon disaster starts as a reading error rather than a measuring error, and the notation is largely to blame.

"tsp" and "tbsp" are unambiguous. "t" and "T" are not: they differ only by capitalisation, which survives neither handwriting nor a poorly typeset recipe card. "tbs" and "tb" both appear for tablespoon. Some older American books use "T." for tablespoon and "t." for teaspoon with the same problem.

The damage depends on the ingredient. A tablespoon of vanilla instead of a teaspoon is expensive and slightly odd-tasting. A tablespoon of table salt instead of a teaspoon is 18.0 g instead of 6.0 g, and the dish is finished. A tablespoon of baking soda instead of a teaspoon is 14.4 g of an ingredient that tastes of soap in any excess.

The sanity check is proportion. In a standard cake, salt and chemical leavening each sit at roughly 1-2% of the flour weight. If a recipe using 250 g of flour appears to call for a tablespoon of baking soda, that is 5.8% and almost certainly a typo.

The spoons themselves

A conversion is only as good as the spoon that executes it, and measuring spoons are one of the least regulated items in a kitchen.

A standard set gives you ¼, ½ and 1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon. Better sets add ⅛ teaspoon and ¾ teaspoon, both of which save arithmetic: ¾ teaspoon of table salt is 4.5 g, and reaching it as a half plus a quarter means two chances to spill.

Manufacturing tolerance is real. Independent testing regularly finds inexpensive spoon sets 5-10% off their nominal volume, and sets are not necessarily consistent within themselves — the quarter is not always exactly a quarter of the teaspoon. On a teaspoon of vanilla that is irrelevant. On a quarter teaspoon of baking soda, 1.2 g nominal, a 10% error lands squarely on the ingredient with the least tolerance.

Check yours with water, which costs nothing. Ten level teaspoons of water should come to 49 mL and weigh about 49 g. If your ten spoonfuls come to 55 g, your teaspoon is over by about a tenth and every gram figure you derive from it inherits that.

Shape matters too. Narrow, deep spoons are harder to level cleanly than wide shallow ones, and round bowls are harder than oval. Long handles that let the spoon sit flat on the counter make levelling easier than ones that tip.

When to use which

Beyond avoiding errors, there is a practical question of which spoon to reach for, and the answer is about resolution rather than convenience.

Use teaspoons for anything potent: salt, leavening, yeast, extracts, ground spices. These are ingredients where a 25% error matters, and a teaspoon divided into quarters gives you the resolution to hit them.

Use tablespoons for bulk at small scale: oil, honey, milk, cocoa, cornstarch in a sauce. Measuring 6 teaspoons of oil one spoonful at a time introduces six chances to spill and no extra accuracy.

And stop using spoons entirely above about a quarter cup. Twelve teaspoons of anything is a measurement nobody should be counting; that is what cups and scales exist for. The crossover in practice is around four tablespoons — 50 g of sugar, or 31 g of flour.

There is a resolution argument underneath this. A ¼ teaspoon spoon divides a teaspoon into four, so measuring 1 teaspoon of salt carries a granularity of 1.5 g — fine relative to the 6.0 g total. Measuring 12 teaspoons a spoonful at a time carries twelve separate filling errors instead of one, so accuracy gets worse as the quantity grows. Cups and scales scale the other way: the larger the quantity, the smaller the proportional error.

Halving and thirding recipes

The 3:1 ratio makes most scaling clean. Half a tablespoon is 1.5 teaspoons. A third of a tablespoon is exactly 1 teaspoon. Two thirds is 2 teaspoons.

Halving gets awkward at the small end, because ⅛ teaspoon is the smallest spoon most sets include. Half of ¼ teaspoon is ⅛, which is fine; half of ⅛ is a smidgen, which is a guess. Below that, weigh — half of a quarter teaspoon of baking soda is 0.60 g, well within a 0.1 g scale's resolution and well beyond any spoon's.

Thirding is where people improvise badly. A third of ¾ teaspoon is ¼, which is clean. A third of ½ teaspoon is 0.167 teaspoons, which is not — convert to grams instead and the problem disappears.
